Basic Robotics Programming

— Vision 2020 Youth Empowerment and Restoration Initiative (YERI) Career Counseling and Empowerment Workshop

The Vision 2020 Youth Empowerment and Restoration Initiative (YERI) has hosted about 27 Career Counselling and Empowerment Workshops in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja. Youths, SSS 1 – 3 students, University and Polytechnic undergraduates in Year 1 and 2 are hosted to a one-day workshop, where they watch films on various key job positions that require the application of skills developed through education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Industry professionals deliver presentations relating to activities within STEM industries in Nigeria. Students learn about the variety of career paths available in the industry and the pre-requisite qualifications for these jobs. Guidance Counsellors learn about how best to support their students as they prepare for science and technology focused careers while Science teachers learn about the academic and practical requirements for these jobs such that they are able to better tune their teaching to meet global needs.

— Vision 2020 Youth Empowerment and Restoration Initiative (YERI) Summer Camp

The Vision 2020 Youth Empowerment and Restoration Initiative (YERI) has held 12 Summer Camp programs. The summer camp is a two weeks programme planned for SS1 – SS3 students. The first week is the ‘Skills Session’ where the students are exposed to STEM skills such as Robotics, Coding, Design, etc. and Leadership skills such as Time Management, Communication Skills, etc. Instructors and facilitators for the program will include qualified teachers and professionals. The best students that emerge from the Skills Class will proceed to the ‘Work Experience Placement’ where they are placed in STEM companies for one week.

— Belt and Road China Teenage Maker Camp and Teacher Workshop

The Vision 2020 Youth Empowerment and Restoration Initiative (YERI) in collaboration with the National Academy of Science and the China Ministry for Science and Technology in 2018, selected deserving students and teachers from Holy Child College to attend the Belt and Road China Teenage Maker Camp and Teacher Workshop in Beijing China.

The workshop was a 5 day program aimed to strengthen cross-cultural exchange, promote international understanding and inspire innovation in young generation. The camps give students the opportunity to cooperate with the best of their age at an international level, to share ideas and study cutting edge knowledge in science labs of top schools in China, and also, develop their interest through hands-on experience and team work under the guidance of experienced teachers.

— The Drone Technology Workshop

The Drone Technology Workshop held in June 2018 was a one day event which hosted Co-founder of Baltimore-based Global Air Media, Mr. Eno Umoh, and his team. This hands-on workshop was designed to stimulate the interest of the participating students in math and science, as well as careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

This workshop hosted about 30 elementary and secondary school students ranging from ages 5 to 16 years. The students came from different schools in Lagos State. The training which paraded a team of three drone experts was held at the Cedar STEM & Entrepreneurship Hub. The students were coached on the basics of building a drone from the scratch and were able to acquaint themselves with the requisite skills for piloting and landing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), also known as Drones.

— TechWomen Mentoring Program

Lonadek’s Cedar STEM & Entrepreneurship Hub in Collaboration with the US Consulate Nigeria Hosted the TechWomen Mentoring Program. The TechWomen mentoring program was a one day event which held in March 2018. It hosted a 16 member delegation of senior tech executives and professionals from the Silicon Valley who promote STEM. These women represented organizations such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Netflix, Mozilla, Autodesk, Women College Tech, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Juniper Networks, Fairrer Samani Group, Northgate Environmental Management, Jessica Dickinson Goodman Consulting, and the Institute of International Education.

The TechWomen program was introduced by the U.S. government in 2011, to empower the next generation of women leaders in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM). This exchange program brings together women in Northern California with their counterparts in the Middle East, Central Asia, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa including Nigeria for a professional mentorship at leading technology companies in the U.S.

— Hackaday World Create Day

In April, 2017, the Cedar STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) & Entrepreneurship Hub joined the rest of the world to mark the Hackaday World Create Day 2016 with so much fun and fervor. The Cedar STEM Hub made a landmark with the assembly of budding talents, maverick innovators and quintessential inventors in various fields of human endeavors.

— Young Transformer and Innovators (YTI) OR Junior Engineers, Technologists and Scientists (JETS) Science Project Competition (Lagos & Abuja Edition)

This competition exposes the striking abilities of enterprising, vibrant, talented and creative students, who are passionate about transforming their immediate communities and the world at large through scientific and technological innovations and developments. The best projects are selected from various secondary schools in Nigeria.

— Girls in STEM Day Out

In line with the Vision 2020 YERI focus; YERI is passionate about the education and empowerment of the girl-child particularly in STEM. The low participation of girls and women in STEM fields can be observed at all levels of education, with the likelihood for female participation to decrease as the level of education rises. This is mirrored in the labor market where there are few women in STEM related careers, and women are largely absent in higher level managerial and decision-making positions. Vision 2020 YERI in collaboration with the Cedar STEM and Entrepreneurship Hub hosted the Girls in STEM Day Out in December 2017 with over 30 female students from 5 Secondary Schools. STEM. The main objective of this event was to charge and encourage more girls to purse professions in STEM careers especially in areas like engineering where there is a very low representation of female professionals. The event also charged teachers to encourage their female students and provide guidance.

— Essay Competitions

The programme is geared towards encouraging and nurturing the creative writing and communication skills of young people. Writing and communication is key to professional and career development; hence the major reason the competition has become an age long tradition of YERI. The best three write-ups are awarded and the best essay is displayed in the YERI newsletter.

IBM Analytics

— IBM - Analytics, Block chain, Mobile-App & Gaming/Cartoon

The IBM Africa Skills Academy Program is IBM’s premier training and certification initiative for academia in the MEA region. The program provides unique academic roadmaps for faculty members and students, preparing them to succeed in demanding positions unique to the market. The program provides a world class training experience, leveraging IBM official courses, IBM official instructors and hands-on laboratories in multiple languages. IBM is dedicated to the Middle East & Africa as a hub for innovation.

— Women in STEM

CEDAR STEM Enterpreneurship Hub in collaboration with the Lonadek Nigeria Limited and Vision 2020 YERI hosted the Women in STEM event in March 2018. The Women in STEM was a one day event which focused on girls and women STEMpreneurs and Techpreneurs. Guests in attendance were students of Yaba College of Technology, the University of Lagos and past participants from Vision 2020 Career Counseling Industry Awareness and Youth Empowerment Initiative. The objective of  the ‘Women in STEM’ was to encourage and inspire young women seeking career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by connecting women professionals in this field who would share their experiences to coach and mentor them.

— Offshore West Africa Youth Empowerment Programme

Penn Well in conjunction with The Energy Institute’s Young Professionals Network (YPN), Vision 2020 YERI in conjuction and Lonadek Nigeria Limited, and PennWell hosted the Youth Empowerment Programme which took take place in January 2016. The programme addressed key technology and development issues for the West African offshore oil and gas market, through a comprehensive educational program and three-day exhibition and conference, with the 2016 event focusing on Positioning for a Sustainable Future as the core theme.

— Shell Women Network

Vision 2020 YERI in collaboration with Shell Women Network hosted a STEM empowerment workshop for girls in senior secondary schools on the Lagos Island.
